Emergency Preparedness Animation
We worked with the VCSEP (Voluntary and Community Sector Emergencies Partnership) which is hosted by the British Red Cross to produce in an animated explainer video. Communicating emergency preparedness through clear, accessible animation.
Working alongside the VCSEP and the Devon and Cornwall Local Resilience Forum to help residents understand what happens during emergencies, where they can access support, and how communities can prepare before severe weather or other major incidents occur.
Clear communication is essential during emergencies. Our role was to translate complex information into an approachable animation that could help communities understand available support before it was needed.
Emergency planning can involve multiple organisations, responsibilities and support services, making it difficult to communicate clearly to the public. The challenge was to present this information in a way that felt reassuring, approachable and easy to understand while remaining accurate and consistent with guidance from several partner organisations. In response to the recent storm Goretti we created a video with a meaning that is a strong current issue in the publics eye. Letting the public know that extra support is available in times of emergency beyond the regular emergency services. What to do in an emergency, and how they can help support there local community.
We worked closely with the VCSEP and project partners throughout development, refining the script to a size word count that would transition into an animation that would be engaging. We developed the storyboard and visual approach through collaborative feedback. The characters were designed to represent a diverse range of people, reflecting the communities supported. We kept layouts clean and, uncluttered scenes made simple visual metaphors that weren't too catastrophic in nature. We carefully paced the animation to help communicate important information without overwhelming viewers. The animation was designed to be accessible to a broad audience and suitable for use across digital channels and community communications.
